Capers win X Invitational

The Cape Breton Capers stole the X-Men's thunder this past Saturday night as they won the 30th annual Nike StFX Invitational tournament 82-79 in a close championship game played at the Oland Centre. Led by Tournament MVP Tremaine Fraser who scored 23 points, the Capers held on to edge the host X-Men who were the two-time defendning tournament champions. Philip Nkrumah scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds and Scott Jaspers-Fayer contributed 12 points.
Both teams were tied at 20 points a piece after the first quarter of play and the Capers held a 45-42 margin at half-time. The Capers held onto the slim lead throughout the second half, with the X-Men unable to draw even or surpass them. Tournament all-star Terrance Taylor led the X-Men with 24 points and 8 rebounds while Christian Upshaw scored 20 and Tyler Richards had 16.
In the consolation final, the UPEI Panthers defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 69-83. Manock Lual led the Panthers with 25 points, Jonathan Cooper scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds and Andrew Black scored 12. Michael Anderson led the Varsity Reds with 24 points and Dustin Anthony scored 14.
Named to the tournment all-star team were Terrance Taylor and Tyler Richards from StFX, Scott Jaspers-Fayer from Cape Breton, Manock Lual from UPEI and Michael Anderson from UNB.
The X-Men next see action this upcoming weekend at the Eric Garland Invitational tournament being played at UNB. They will meet the Capers again, along with the host Varsity Reds and Lee Academy from Maine.
