\r\nSteve Konchalski has joined Jerry Hemmings in the Canadian university record book.
\r\nThe St. Francis Xavier men’s basketball head coach tied Hemmings, now retired, for most coaching victories in CIS history as the X-Men defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies 82-76 in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon at The Tower.
\r\nKonchalski, now in his 35th season with the team, has 734 career victories. Hemmings had 734 wins in 28 seasons with the Brandon Bobcats. The record includes regular season, playoff and non-conference games.
\r\nUnder Konchalski, the X-Men have won three national championships. He was named CIS coach of the year in 2000-01.
\r\nTerrence Taylor scored 21 points and Christian Upshaw added 18 to lead the X-Men on Sunday.
\r\nMark McLaughlin and Joey Haywood each had a game-high 22 points to pace the Huskies.
\r\nIt was the final pre-season game for both teams. Both St. F.X. and Saint Mary’s open the 2009-10 regular season on the road on Friday night. The X-Men visit the UPEI Panthers while the Huskies travel to Cape Breton to take on the Capers.
