X-Men win final regular season game over Huskies

The CIS ranked No. 6 StFX X-Men won in convincing fashion Saturday night in Antigonish, NS over the Saint Mary’s Huskies by a 30 point margin, 84-54. Terry Thomas, currently third overall in AUS scoring, was named Subway Player of the Game, netting 23 points for the blue and white in the victory as the X-Men closed out the season with a perfect 9-0 record on home court.
Saint Mary’s was able to control the tempo in the first quarter, as they connected on many of their opportunities and gain a 16-12 lead, as the X-Men struggled to cash in baskets in the opening quarter. StFX regrouped in the second quarter as they were able to settle their game down and outscore the Huskies 18-10 to establish a 30-26 lead at half-time.
The X-Men really took over in the second half, as they came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring a lackluster Huskies squad 28-13. The final quarter was virtually identical to the third as the X-Men outscored the visitors 26-15 en route to the 84-54 victory. Terry Thomas and Bol Kong were a dynamic duo for the blue and white in the second half, providing much of the scoring.
Thomas finished the game with 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocks while Kong was able to collect 14 points for the home side, along with eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Freshman Kohlin Rasenberg cashed in eight points for the X-Men late in the game, including a pair of from three-point range. Jeremy Dunn and Will Donkoh each scored seven points apiece.
AUS number two scorer Tony Fassett scored a team high 15 points for the Huskies and had seven rebounds and four steals in the game. Brian Rouse had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Miguel Pink scored nine points and added four boards for the Huskies.
Looking at the numbers side of the game, the X-Men shot 44.4% from field goal range, 45.5% from the three point line and 71.4% from the free throw line. The Huskies were 31.3% from field goal range, 27.8% from the three point line and 58.3% in free throws.
With the regular season wrapped up, the shift focuses to the Halifax Metro Centre for March 2-4th where the Subway AUS Men’s Basketball Final Six Championship will take place.
The X-Men have secured a first round playoff bye with their 16-4 record and first place finish on the season. They will await the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal game between the fourth place Cape Breton Capers (11-9) and fifth place Dalhousie Tigers (9-11). The X-Men’s semi-final game on Saturday is scheduled for 6:00 pm. The second place Acadia Axemen (14-6) will play the winner of the other quarterfinal between the third place UPEI Panthers (13-7) and sixth place Saint Mary’s Huskies (9-11).
