Dunn leads X-Men to home win over Tigers
In a see-saw battle Wednesday night at Oland Centre in Antigonish, the StFX X-Men scored a 76-71 win over the Dalhousie Tigers in AUS basketball action.
Jeremy Dunn led the blue and white with 27 points, including shooting 3-for-4 from three-point range. The fifth-year senior from Wolfville, N.S., added eight rebounds in 33 minutes of play.
Point guard Tyrell Vernon chipped in 19 points, three assists and one steal. Jordan Clarke and Will Donkoh also hit double digits for the X-Men with 14 and 11 points, respectively, along with two steals apiece.
After an 18-18 first quarter, the X-Men took an 11-point lead (36-25) before heading to halftime with a 40-32 advantage.
Dunn, with 13, Vernon (11) and Clarke (10) were in double figures at the break.
With StFX protecting a six-point lead (74-68), Dunn sealed the deal with a breakaway slam dunk. On the next Tigers’ possession, X-Men forward Shane Coupland blocked a three-point attempt.
The Tigers had seven three-pointers (7-for-19) on the game, while the X-Men connected on 3-for-13 from beyond the arc.
Jarred Reid led the Tigers with 20 points, while adding five rebounds and two assists. William Yengue contributed 18 points, nine rebounds, one assist and one steal for the visitors.
Simon Marr and Kashrell Lawrence, off the bench, chipped in 10 points apiece for the Tigers.
It was the first win for the X-Men over the Tigers in four regular season match-ups.
With the win, the X-Men improve to 8-11, while the Tigers fall to 10-9.
The X-Men will wrap up the AUS regular season Saturday, Feb. 23, when they host the rival Saint Mary’s Huskies (6-13). Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Oland Centre.
