X-Men trounce Panthers, Varsity Reds in AUS menÕs basketball

The StFX X-Men improved to 3-1 on the regular season with convincing weekend home wins over the UNB Varsity Reds and UPEI Panthers in AUS basketball action.
Sunday afternoon, the blue and white defeated the Varsity Reds 102-78. The X-Men cruised to victory after taking a 61-34 half-time advantage.
Fifth-year senior Jeremy Dunn led the X-Men with 27 points, while adding seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot.
All-Canadian Terry Thomas scored 23, while chipping in seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocked shots. Point guard Tyrell Vernon also scored in double figures with 11. Will Donkoh contributed nine rebounds six assists and four steals to go with six points.
Saturday night, Dunn led five X-Men in double figures with 21 points in a 104-73 win over the Panthers.
Thomas, with 19, Donkoh (16), Shane Coupland (13) and Vernon (11) rounded out the X-men with 10-plus points in the victory. Coupland led the blue and white with seven rebounds, while Thomas added five assists and five steals.
Mandrez Downey led the Panthers with 19 points, while Deontay Smith and Geoff Doane supplied 12 apiece in a losing cause.
The X-Men shot 48.1 per cent from the field, while out-rebounding the Panthers 37 to 34.
The X-Men return to action this weekend when they host the Dalhousie Tigers (Friday) and Saint Mary’s Huskies (Saturday) at Oland Centre. Both games will tip-off at 8 p.m.
