X-Men fall in the Wells

\r\nSep 28, 2008 - The Acadia Axemen hockey team will keep the Herbin Cup at home after defeating the StFX X-Men 6-4 in the Don Wells Invitational Tournament Championship game. The two teams met just over a week ago in Antigonish, NS in exhibition play which resulted in a 2-1 OT win for the X-Men but this time around the Axemen grabbed the win.
\r\nAcadia jumped out into a 4-1 lead after one period of play. Second year forwards Tyler Whitehead and Zack McMillan scored a goal each in the opening two minutes - only 12 seconds apart. X-Man Brett Robertson netted StFX's first goal on the power play. Axemen Scott Tregunna and Chris Bruton added to the first period lead.
\r\nOpening the second period on the powerplay, defenseman Nathan Welton nudged the Axemen lead to 5-1 after 32 seconds of play in the second frame. StFX responded back scoring two powerplay goals following the 10 minute misconduct and five minute checking from behind penalty assessed to Acadia's Scott Tregunna. Brett Robertson picked up his second goal of the evening while fourth year winger Sean Flinn pocketed the X-Men's third goal.
\r\nAssistant Captain Blair Jarrett knocked in his first goal of the weekend in the closing minutes of the second period to give Acadia a 6-3 advantage. Eight minutes into the third period, StFX's first year forward Kevin Undershute completed the scoring for the night, giving Acadia the 6-4 championship win.
\r\nIn the consolation game played at 1pm, the Saint Mary's Huskies handed the Queen's Golden Gaels a 7-0 thrashing.
\r\nIn the semifinal, Phil Mangan had a goal and an assist to help the ice X-Men to a 4-2 win over Saint Mary’s at the Don Wells Invitational hockey tournament on Saturday at Acadia. Brett Morrison and Brent Theriault also scored for the X-Men. Gerrett Peters and Tyler Hawes replied for the Huskies.
\r\nThe X-Men will next see action this weekend as they travel to the United States for a pair of exhibition games against NCAA schools. On Saturday night they will play the University of New Hampshire and on Sunday afternoon will meet the University of Massachusetts.
