X-Men shutout by Acadia in exhibition play
The hockey X-Men travelled to Berwick, NS for a Monday afternoon exhibition tangle with the Acadia Axemen, and they came home on the short end of a 4-0 game, as they were shutout by the fourth place Axemen.
Acadia currently holds a 9-5-1 record in AUS play and sits four points back from first place UNB (11-2-1). The X-Men are in sixth place with a 5-7-3 record as regular season play is set to resume this weekend.
In their recent exhibition game, the second period was the deciding factor as all four of the Axemen goals were scored in the middle frame. After a scoreless first period, Spencer Jezegou got the home team on the board with a goal at 2:46, then Alex Beaton exploded for three consecutive goals for a natural hat trick.
Beaton’s goals came at 7:22 and shortly after at 8:29, followed up by a power play marker at 13:57. Cullen Morin and Chris Moulson each had two assists in the game as the Axemen held off the X-Men for the third period as well.
Acadia netminders Peter DiSalvo and Evan Mosher split the win in nets, each playing a period and a half. DiSalvo posted 13 saves and Mosher 10 as the Axemen outshot the X-Men 25-23. Morgan Clark took the loss in nets for StFX who were 0 for 8 on the power play.
StFX will resume play this weekend as they are on the road to open up the second half of the AUS season. Friday night they will face the first place UNB Varsity Reds (11-2-1) in Fredericton, then travel to Charlottetown Saturday evening for a match against the fifth place UPEI Panthers (8-6-0).
