Former X-Men goaltender Battochio scores goal in professional league
January 9, 2012
Former StFX X-Men goaltender Danny Battochio was credited with a goal December 31st, 2011 while playing for the Rapid City Rush in the Central Hockey League. After Battochio made the initial save on a Tulsa Oilers opponent, the Oilers player sent an errant pass down the length of the ice that found its way into the back of the net. Battochio was credited with the first ever goal by a goaltender in team history.
"I remember their player passing the puck in front of the net then next thing you know it's going down the ice," says Battochio. "I didn't know at first that I was the last one to touch the puck on our team until it went in. I then realized it was my goal when the guys on the ice and the referee looked back at me, it was a pretty cool feeling!"
Battochio manned the pipes from 2006-2009 for the X-Men, concluding an excellent AUS career with a 2nd team AUS All-star nod in the 2008-2009 season, Battochio’s last with the club. Currently Battochio is the goalkeeper for the Rapid City Rush in the Central Hockey League where he sports a 2.74 Goals Against Average and 0.904 Save Percentage in 21 games. The Rush are seated fourth place in the Turner Division with a 18-12-1 record.
On behalf of everyone at the StFX Department of Athletics and Recreation, we would like to congratulate Danny on this rare feat, and wish him and his team good luck the rest of the season.
