SMU continues hot streak, beat X-Men 5-1

The Saint Mary’s Huskies cruised to a 5-1 victory over the StFX X-Men Friday night at the Keating Centre in Antigonish, N.S. SMU was dominant in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals to seal the victory.
The first period was very evenly matched, with both teams unable to muster a goal heading into the second frame. The shots were 9-7 in favor of Saint Mary's after one period of play.

Matt Tipoff (D’Orazio, Pridham) started the onslaught at the 5:53 mark of the second frame with a shorthanded marker, followed by consecutive tallies from Stephen Johnston (Fergus, Tipoff) and Cory Tanaka (Sticklan, Mackinnon). The X-Men were unable to generate many chances on Huskies goaltender Neil Conway, who was not very busy in the second frame.
StFX picked up their play in the third period and were able to cut the Saint Mary's lead to two with a nice powerplay goal from Michael Kirkpatrick (Bast, Morrison) at the 9:29 mark of the third. It was all too little too late however, as SMU scored two more goals from Pridham (Bloodoff) and Deighan (O’Donnell, Bloodoff) to up their lead to 5-1 and send the X-Men home with a loss.
StFX ended up outshooting Saint Mary's 29-26. Conway stood tall in nets for the Huskies, making 28 saves while Morgan Clarke turned aside 21 shots for The X-Men. Conway was named Subway Player of the Game for the Huskies who have now won four out of their last five games.
The sixth place X-Men fall to 3-6-2 on the season and will battle the eighth place Dalhousie Tigers (2-10-0) at the StFX Keating Centre in Antigonish Saturday night while the fourth place Saint Mary’s Huskies (7-4-1) take on the third place Acadia Axemen (7-3-1) in Halifax. The X-Men are looking to break a three-game losing skid.
