Acadia narrowly beats X-Men in overtime thriller

The Acadia Axeman were victorious Friday night in Antigonish, NS after beating the StFX X-Men 4-3 in overtime. Acadia defenseman Christopher Owens continued his hot start to the season tallying two goals, including the overtime winner, to lead the Axeman to the victory.
Both teams came out of the gate flying, finishing every check and creating many scoring chances. Acadia was the team that got on the board first when Alex Beaton (Gibbons, Jezegou) scored on a low slap shot from the point on the powerplay at the 7:31 mark. The X-Men were able to respond however when with only over a minute to play in the first frame Michael Kirkpatrick (Undershute, Brannon) buried a rebound home off of a Scott Brannon wrist shot. The score was deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the second period.
The tight checking affair boiled over into the second period as both teams played tight defense, not allowing many scoring opportunities. Owens (Clarke, Beaton) scored the lone goal in the frame shorthanded on a great individual effort, going top bunk on a breakaway. Acadia goaltender Evan Mosher and X-Men keeper Joey Perricone were particularly sharp making save after save to keep their teams in the contest.
The third period was wide open, with both teams going back and forth trying to get the upper hand. The X-Men evened the score at 2-2 when Bryce Swan (Chisholm, Morrison) batted home his 10th of the season off of a great individual rush from X-Men defenseman R.D. Chisholm at the 2:01 mark. The X-Men goal didn’t faze Acadia however, as the Axeman came right back and scored their third goal off of a slap shot from the point from Michael Ward (Clark, Beaton). The X-Men showed great resiliency however to come back and tie the game at 3-3 when Michael Kirkpatrick (Undershute, McAvoy) scored his second of the game on a redirection at the 15:52 mark. After 60 minutes of play the game remained 3-3 and headed to overtime.
Overtime began with both teams going shot for shot, with both goaltenders standing tall. Owens (Chouinard) was able to end the game however, scoring on a rebound at the 7:09 mark. The goal was his second of the game and ninth of the season, as he currently leads all defenseman in conference scoring.
Acadia outshot the X-Men 39-32. Both goalies played tremendous. Acadia keeper Evan Mosher made 29 saves in the win while X-Men goaltender Joey Perricone made 35 saves in a losing effort. Christopher Owens was named Subway Player of the Game for his two-goal effort.
The second place Axemen (9-3-1) go back to Wolfville, NS to continue their home and home weekend series with the sixth place X-Men (4-6-3) as the two teams tangle again on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
