X-Men knock off CIS No. 6 Axemen
WOLFVILLE, NS - The StFX X-Men ended the CIS ranked No. 6 Acadia Axemen's six-game winning streak after a tight scoreless two periods ended in a 4-1 victory for the X-Men on a rare Sunday afternoon game at Acadia University.
StFX redeemed a 4-3 overtime loss to the same Axemen this past Friday night in a home-and-home weekend series.
All of Sunday’s goals were scored in the final frame as the Axemen took a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the third period. Rookie forward Nicolas Choinard netted a Joey Perricone rebound off of his own shot to give the Axemen their only lead.
At the nine minute mark of the third period, StFX's Brett Robertson grabbed a loose rebound off of a Bryce Swan shot in the slot to tie the game at one a piece.
The X-Men struck again just over two minutes later when Brett Morrison stole the puck away from an Axemen defender in front of the net and fed Jason Bast who was unmarked in front of the net for his eighth goal of the year and the eventual game winner.
StFX scored their third goal with just over four minutes remaining in the game with Nick Pageau scoring his first of the season. The X-Men pocketed an empty netter with just over a minute remaining to solidify the win and improve to 5-6-3, while the Axemen remain in second place, two points behind the first place UNB Varsity Reds.
Acadia outshot StFX 33-28 but a 9-9 shots on goal draw in the third was the game breaker for the X-Men. StFX goaltender Joey Perricone was named the Subway first star of the game with 32 saves.
The Axemen conclude the first half of the regular season at home next Friday as they host the Saint Mary's Huskies. StFX heads to Halifax to take on the Huskies this coming Wednesday night.
