December 1, 2012
Cory MacIntosh’s goal 5:26 into overtime gave the StFX X-Men a 4-3 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus Friday night in New Brunswick. Drew Owsley made 42 saves in the StFX net.
Steven Kuhn had tied the game for StFX with just over six minutes to play in the third period.
After a scoreless first period that saw shots fairly even at 10-8 in favor of X, the second period saw an exchange of three power play goals as the Aigles Blues led 2-1 after forty minutes of play.
StFX’s Josh Day struck first as he scored at 5:46 while on the man advantage. Day grabbed a rebound in front of the Moncton net and fired the puck past Aigles Bleus netminder Adrien Lemay. Ted Stephens and Jarrad Struthers assisted on the play.
The Aigles Bleus then picked up consecutive power play goals at 7:33 and 11:50 from Raphael Pouliot (Samuel Groulx, Eric Faille) and Kevin Charland (Guillaume Parenteau, Francis Rochon). Shots were 18-14 in favor of the home team in the second frame.
Jason Bast quickly put the X-Men back in the game with a third period goal scored 56 seconds in. Brennen Wray and Michael Kirkpatrick picked up the helpers.
The lead didn’t last long however, as Charland notched his second goal of the evening just over a minute later, beating Owsley low. Parenteau assisted on the play.
With Moncton leading 3-2, Steven Kuhn took a Brad Cuzner pass across the top of the slot and fired it home to tie the game and force the overtime period. Murdock MacLellan also assisted on the tying goal.
The AIgles Bleus had several good scoring chances in overtime and outshot the X-Men 8-4 as Owsley came up with several key saves for the blue and white.
When it appeared a shootout was looming, MacIntosh jumped on a rebound off a Derek Claffey shot from the point and sealed the victory for the X-Men with only 26 seconds left in the extra period. Cole Grbavac also assisted on the final goal as the X-Men improve to 9-5-1 on the season.
Shots were 45-44 in favor of the Aigles Bleus, who drop to 7-5-3. The Aigles will host Saint Mary’s (10-4-1) on Saturday night, while the X-Men will travel to Fredericton to take on the St. Thomas Tommies (1-13-1).
