Despite the Pandas second-half comeback, the AUS bronze medalist X-Women would reclaim their lead late in the fourth quarter, sending them to the regional final tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
The X-Women came out strong from the opening whistle, going on a 6-0 run in the first few minutes of play and only allowing two points from the Pandas. The Atlantic team created a 10-point cushion at the end of the first, up 22-12.
The second saw the Pandas bring a heightened momentum, shrinking the deficit to five two minutes into the quarter. But that’s as close as Alberta would get to their opponent, who finished the half up 37-32.
The Pandas continued to narrow the gap in the third, breaking down the StFX offense and outscoring their opponent 25-19. With 30 seconds to go before the end of the quarter, Alberta forward Kendra Asleson (Richmond, B.C.) completed a three-point play to overtake the X-Women, 57-56, going into the fourth.
Alberta saw its biggest lead of the match in the final quarter when Marisa Haylett (Vancouver), shooting 75 per cent from the free-throw line, went two-for-two, giving the Pandas a seven-point lead. The X-Women were determined for a comeback though, and it would come in the final minutes of play. Victoria Anderson (Antigonish, N.S.) would sink the basket that would reclaim the StFX lead and send the team to the regional final.
StFX will now take on the winner of the Carleton and Winnipeg match-up in tonight’s other semifinal game.
