Jones helps lead X-Women in win over Capers
The X-Women basketball team played to a 66-56 win over the Cape Breton Capers Wednesday evening in Sydney, NS. Veteran X-Women post player Kirsten Jones wasted no time settling back in to the X-Women line-up as she returned to play from a mid-November injury. Jones scored a game high 16 points and added 10 rebounds as she was named Player of the Game for the X-Women, who improve to 4-4 on the season.
The X-Women took an early lead in the game and didn’t look back. They held an 18-12 advantage at half-time and a 37-26 lead at half-time. The Capers went on a 6-0 run to start the third quarter to close to within five points, but that was as close as they would come as the X-Women held 12 point lead after three quarters at 51-39. The blue and white held onto their lead throughout the final quarter en route to the 66-56 victory, their second win over the Capers this season.
Jones led the X-Women scoring with her double-double game, and Rebecca Sheehan and Vanessa Pickard each contributed 13 points apiece. Pickard added five assists and three steals on the night, while Sheehan sunk two of three baskets from three-point range.
The X-Women had a 52.3% field goal percentage on the game, compared to the Capers 37.9%.Leading scorer on the Capers was Jessica Steed with 14 points, while Cassie Cooke contributed 13 points and 9 rebounds. Jahlica Kirnon scored 11.
The X-Women next sees action against the last place UPEI Panthers (1-7) this coming Sunday afternoon, January 15th in Charlottetown. StFX (4-4) is in sole possession of fourth place with a 4-4 season record to date.
Game Notes: Along with Jones’ return to the X-Women line-up, Kolbi Roper also returned to game form, recovered from a concussion…X-Women forward Donisha Young and the Capers Hope Edwards were ejected from the game late in the third quarter due to fighting after they grappled for a ball under the Capers hoop…X-Women freshman Brittney Brown was also ejected for leaving the bench during the incident…all three will serve an automatic one game suspension in the next regular season game.
