Basketball X-Women split weekend home games

The StFX X-Women (2-2) split a pair of weekend homes games at Oland Centre in Antigonish.
Sunday afternoon, on the strength of a 24-9 run in the fourth quarter, the blue and white defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 88-72.
Lia St. Pierre led the X-Women with 25 points, while Kolbi Roper and Rebecca Sheehan also hit double digits in scoring with 23 and 17 points, respectively.
St. Pierre, who shot a blistering 11-for-15 from the field, added nine rebounds, three steals, one assist and one blocked shot.
Sheehan, a fourth-year senior, added nine assists, eight steals, three rebounds and one blocked shot for the winners.
For the Varsity Reds, Claire Colborne scored 24 points, along with 10 rebounds and four assists, while Katelyn Mangold chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Saturday evening, a second-half rally fell short as the X-Women dropped an 85-81 decision to the visiting UPEI Panthers.
The blue and white, trailing 51-36 at halftime, cut the lead to one by outscoring the Panthers 26-12 in the third quarter. After the X-Men took a three-point lead, the Panthers regained the lead and sealed the win.
St. Pierre led the X-Women with a double-double – 16 points and 19 rebounds, while adding two steals. Roper also hit double digits in scoring and rebounds with 21 and 10, respectively. Freshman Lindsay Lessard was the third X-Woman in double digits with 12 points.
Jenna Jones led four Panthers in double figures with 23 points, while Nakita Newman added 22. Danielle MacDonald and Amy Gough chipped in 12 and 11 points for UPEI.
The X-Women return to action this weekend when they host the Dalhousie Tigers (Friday) and Saint Mary’s Huskies (Saturday) at Oland Centre. Both games will tip-off at 6 p.m.
