X-Women welcome sharp-shooting guard from Dartmouth High School

ANTIGONISH, NS – StFX women's basketball head coach Augy Jones is pleased to announce the commitment of sharp-shooting guard Alex MacLean from Bedford, N.S. to the X-Women basketball program for the 2017-18 season.

"One of our main areas needing improvement is offensive production and Alex can help us in that area right away," comments Coach Jones. "She is an excellent long-range scorer with outstanding shooting mechanics.  Additionally, Alex is a physical player who rebounds, defends and is not afraid to attack the hoop on offense." 

"Alex is another perfect fit for our program - an excellent student and teammate who has been passionate about basketball for a long time. Several members of our team have played with her before and are very excited that she is joining them at StFX."

Alex has played with the Bedford Eagles basketball program since the age of four. The rookie of the year in 2014 at CP Allen High School, she went on to compete for Dartmouth High School in grades 11 and 12. Alex was selected as a tournament all-star in the 2016 Leo Hayes tournament in Fredericton, and garnered tournament MVP honors at the Mabel Arsenault Memorial tournament in Antigonish. A five-time member of Basketball Nova Scotia representative teams in the summer time, she also lends her time tutoring other high school students and is a member of the Dartmouth High School choir. A three-time 'Principal's List' student for high academic average, Alex is enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program at StFX and will major in social justice.

Alex's high school basketball coach Jason Wilson comments, "It has been a real pleasure to coach Alex over the last year and a half. She has a high basketball IQ and is committed to becoming a better player. Her work ethic and commitment to Dartmouth HS basketball has been impressive, but more importantly she is a great teammate. She is strong academically and is prepared to be a successful student-athlete at the AUS level."

The Nova Scotia native is excited to be joining the X-Women basketball program and StFX family commenting, "Everyone is so friendly around campus and my future teammates have been so welcoming. Playing AUS basketball has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and I am so thankful to all of my supporters and to the people who have encouraged me to get to this stage." 

"I am ready to begin this new chapter in my life as a member of  the X-Women program, playing for Coach Jones and growing together with my teammates."
