X-Women cap off strong opening weekend in AUS basketball with 54-45 victory over the Sea-Hawks
ST. JOHN'S, NL – The STFX X-Women capped off a strong opening weekend in AUS basketball with a 54-45 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks Saturday evening at The Fieldhouse.
STFX (2–0) used a balanced effort and strong rebounding to pull away in the second half, overcoming a slow shooting night to secure the win. The X-Women led 18–15 after the first quarter and took a narrow 30–28 edge into halftime before outscoring Memorial 24–17 over the final 20 minutes.
Forward Shannon Neita had a strong game, leading the way with 14 rebounds, six points, and a team-high four assists, while adding two blocks and two steals. Louise Rouse was a force off the bench, contributing 11 points and five rebounds, while Ava MacNutt added nine points and Abby Mercer chipped in eight.
Despite shooting just 37.3 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc, STFX made up ground on the boards and at the defensive end. The X-Women forced 22 Memorial turnovers and turned them into 18 points, while also dominating second-chance opportunities 10–0.
For Memorial (0–2), Brooke Ledevehat led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting. Serena Phillips added 11 points, but turnovers plagued the Sea-Hawks, who managed just six points in the final quarter as STFX tightened defensively.
The X-Women bench proved to be the difference, outscoring Memorial's reserves 28–9.
STFX will be back in action at the STFX Saputo Centre on Wednesday evening, October 19th for their home opener when they host Dalhousie at 6:00 pm.
