Ice X-Women 1-1 in exhibition play
The X-Women hockey team opened pre-season exhibition play with a home-and-home series with the Dalhousie Tigers, with each team coming out on top in their own barn. The Tigers earned a 3-2 win Saturday in Halifax, while the X-Women posted a 4-1 win at the StFX Keating Centre Sunday afternoon.
\r\nIn Saturday’s game, the X-Women held a 2-1 lead after the first period of play on goals by freshman forward Daniela Falconio and Carolyn Campbell. Laura Shearer replied for the Tigers.
\r\nThe X-Women would be held scoreless, however for the remainder of the game as Dalhousie scored one marker in each of the second and third periods off the sticks of Cassie Banfield and Robyn Nicholson.
\r\nStFX outshot Dalhousie by a 33-26 margin in the game.
\r\nThe X-Women turned the score sheet around on Sunday and came out on top with the 4-1 exhibition win.
\r\nAfter a scoreless first period of play, StFX scored two power play goals in the second period to take a 2-0 lead into the second intermission. Marilynn Hay netted the first X goal just 1:18 into the second frame, with the assist going to Brittney Perkins.
\r\nNicole Hansom scored the second marker late in the period (18:34) while Leah Boucher and Carolyn Campbell earned assists on the play.
\r\nCampbell increased the StFX lead with a third period goal at the 4:55 mark and teammate Jacinta Sullivan widened the lead to 4-0 just 29 seconds later. Hansom assisted on the Campbell goal while Allana Deveau notched the assist on Sullivan’s marker.
\r\nRachel Cox put the Tigers on the board with their lone goal 15:03 in the third period. Tigers netminder Emelie Ederors look the loss in nets, facing 34 X-Women shots, while rookie goaltender Katie Greenway earned the win for X, setting aside 27 Dalhousie shots.
\r\nThe X-Women will continue exhibition play on the upcoming weekend with an Invitational tournament in Moncton Oct. 2-4.
