Hockey X-Women improve to 4-0
The CIS ranked No. 2 X-Women hockey team picked up a pair of weekend wins against Halifax opponents. Saturday afternoon in Halifax the X-Women defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 6-1, while Sunday afternoon at home they shut out the Saint Mary’s Huskies 6-0. Alex Normore had a six point weekend for the X-Women while Janelle Parent posted five points.
In Sunday’s win over the Huskies, Parent and Molly MacDonald each scored two goals apiece. After a scoreless first period, Normore (Parent, MacDonald) got the X-Women onto the board 4:56 into the second period, then the flood gates opened as StFX scored three more goals to hold a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Parent (Normore) scored at 7:50 then MacDonald (Normore, Downey) followed up with her first goal of the game on the power play at 8:39.Daniela Falconio rounded out the second period scoring at 17:56 with Leah Boucher and Rebecca Traversa assisting on the play.
MacDonald and Parent picked up their second goals of the game in the third period with Normore picking up one more assist and Downey assisting on each goal to end the game with three points. Both MacDonald’s goals were scored on the power play as the X-Women were 2-7 on the man-advantage. The Huskies were 0-3 on the power play.
StFX outshot the Huskies 42-13 in the game as Kristy Garrow posted the shutout win in nets for the X-Women. Bria Sharkley was tagged with the loss.
The X-Women opened the weekend with an equally impressive performance against the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax with the 6-1 win. Nicole Hansom scored a hat trick for StFX.
Hansom got the visitors off to a 2-0 lead after the first period with a power play goal at 14:25 and another even strength marker at 16:53. Brittney Perkins and Abygail Laking assisted on both goals.
The Tigers got back into the game with a power play goal of their own from Megan O’Neill (McMillan) 6:07 into the second period to make it a one-goal game. The X-Women built up their lead late in the period as Parent (McInnes, Normore) scored at 16:20 and Laking (Hansom) notched a goal at 17:57. With a 4-1 advantage heading into the final period of play, Parent and Hansom would add to the final tally with third period goals, Parent’s coming shorthanded. Laking finished with a goal and three assists on the game.
The shots in the game (38-30) in favor of Dalhousie were not reflective of the final outcome. Katie Greenway picked up the win in nets for the X-Women, who improve to 4-0 on the season.
Next up on the schedule is a road trip to New Brunswick where the X-Women will face the only other undefeated AUS team, the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues (4-0). StFX meets Moncton on Saturday evening then follow up with a Sunday afternoon game against the St. Thomas Tommies (1-3) in Fredericton.
