Draw and bracket announced for 2023 U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championship

RICHMOND HILL, Ont. (U SPORTS) — The Toronto Varsity Blues, who won the OUA championship last night by defeating Nipissing 2-1, are the top seed going into this week's U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championship. U SPORTS announced the seeding on Sunday for the 2023 tournament, which runs from Thursday to Sunday at the CEPSUM arena in Montreal. This marks the first time this century that Toronto has been the tournament top seed, and the first time since 2016 that the top spot has gone to an OUA team.

The complete field, in seeding order, is as follows:

  1. Toronto Varsity Blues (OUA champions: 23-2-2 regular season, 5-1 playoffs)
  2. UBC Thunderbirds (CW champions: 24-2-2, 4-2)
  3. Concordia Stingers (RSEQ champions: 20-4-1, 4-1)
  4. UNB Reds (AUS champions: 23-2-3, 5-2)
  5. Montréal Carabins (hosts: 17-4-4, 3-3)
  6. Nipissing Lakers (OUA finalists: 19-4-3, 4-1)
  7. StFX X-Women (AUS finalists: 20-5-3, 4-3)
  8. Mount Royal Cougars (CW finalists: 19-6-3, 5-4)

In women's hockey, the four conference champions are seeded in the top four based on their final national ranking. The four other participants are placed so that each side of the draw includes one team from each conference.

The quarterfinals will be played on Thursday and Friday, as follows: (all times Eastern)

  • Thursday, 3 p.m.: No. 8 Mount Royal vs. No. 1 Toronto
  • Thursday, 7:30 p.m.: No. 4 UNB at No. 5 Montreal
  • Friday, 3 p.m.: No. 7 StFX vs. No. 2 UBC
  • Friday, 7 p.m.: No. 6 Nipissing vs. No. 3 Concordia

Saturday's action starts with two consolation games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the semifinals set for 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the fifth-place game will get underway at 11 a.m., with the bronze-medal game following at 3 p.m. and the championship at 7 p.m.

All eight games from the eight-team competition will be webcast live on CBC Sports digital platforms (English) and USPORTS.ca (French), up to and including Sunday's gold medal game. Sunday's gold-medal game will also be telecast in French on TVA Sports. The full webcast schedule will be available throughout the tournament at usports.ca/en/broadcast.
